Thomas Abowd has conducted
several years of research in Palestine and Israel. He
has been involved in a number of scholarly and activist projects related to the Palestine-Israel Conflict
over the
last 15
years. His research details the spatial construction of identity and difference in contemporary Jerusalem.
His interests
relate
primarily to questions of colonialism and urban space more generally; the effects of Israeli colonialism
and military
rule
on occupied Palestinian spaces more specifically; and the "racialization" and reconfiguration
of space
in highly contested
cities under the weight of de-industrialization. His new research project relates to the class and racial
encounters
between
Arabs and African-Americans in contemporary Detroit. His current project is funded by the Humanities Center
at Wayne
State
University. He is currently working on a book related to racial politics in Detroit.
